How to freshen up your school newsletter

Posted by Sarah Millinson

How to freshen up your school’s newsletterIs it time to give your school’s newsletter an injection of life? Take the opportunity to re-introduce your newsletter to your parent community, students or staff with a new look or fresh ideas to keep them engaged, updated and ensure you are representing your school in the best possible way.

Here's how to freshen up your school newsletter:

  1. Layout
Freshening up your newsletter’s appearance and layout is the quickest and probably easiest way to update your school’s newsletter. Try a new template or sleeker design. Use different brand colours if possible and add borders, shapes or a background. Create blocks of texts with interesting headlines and sections to break up the content so it is easier to read and ensures it grabs the readers’ attention quickly. You will be amazed at the difference it can make to your newsletter.

  2. Content
Are your headlines relevant and helpful? Try rewording them to grab your audience’s attention. Mix up your content by including a new feature or personalised articles. If you can’t commit to a continuing feature on one topic, try a ‘special’ feature where it changes each issue to ensure parents, teachers or the wider school community is constantly seeing something different and unexpected.

Display your information in a different way. If you have statistics or figures to share, try using an infographic to make it more digestible. Add more icons to your pages to associate with themes and topics to add consistency and recognisability.

  3. Imagery
Are those stock images not quite hitting the mark anymore? Why not arrange a photoshoot with students? For the time-poor, try choosing stock images and ask your design team to spice them up with graphics or text to make them more relevant. It may also be time to plough through your image library and pull out some classics to re-purpose.

  4. Share
Make sure you are integrating your newsletter with your school’s other marketing channels. Are you marketing it through social media, your website, blogs or email campaigns? Can you use content from these channels in your newsletter? Don’t write boring content for the sake of it, re-purpose and re-vitalise what you have that is of interest.

  5. Value
When you are building your newsletter content, do you ensure you are adding value to your reader? Could you create some of your content in video format or do you have learning resources your students can download? Aim to offer them something additional and useful to add value to their experience with your school. This will help cement returning readers and is an effective marketing channel.

Re-evaluate your school’s newsletter objectives to check your content still delivers what you had planned. Alter the focus or highlights of your messaging if necessary. This will ensure your audience is receiving the most useful, up-to-date and interesting information for them, in an engaging way. Making small changes can make all the difference!
